Symptoms

When you try to print text in a vertical frame in Microsoft Office Word 2007, the text in the vertical frame does not print correctly. The symptoms that you experience vary depending on the position of the frame and on the number of characters in the frame. In some cases, the text prints. However, the text may be scattered in the frame.Note This problem does not occur in Microsoft Office Word 2003. Additionally, this problem does not occur with a print preview. However, this problem occurs when you use Word 2007 to print a document that was created in Word 2003.

Cause

This problem may occur if the height of the vertical frame is too low.

Workaround

To work around this problem, use a vertical text box instead of a vertical frame. To do this, follow these steps.Note If you are already using a frame, you must create a new vertical text box. Then, copy the text to the text box.

  1. On the Insert tab, click Text Box in the Text group, and then click Draw Text Box.

  2. Click in the document to draw a text box.

  3. In the text box, type ABCDE.

  4. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Print.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Start Word 2007.

  2. On the Developer tab, click Legacy Tools in the Controls group, and then click Insert Frame under Legacy Forms.Note If the Developer tab is not displayed, click the Microsoft Office Button, click Word Options, click Show Developer tab in the Ribbon, and then click OK.

  3. Draw a horizontal frame in the document.

  4. On the Page Layout tab, click Text Direction in the Page Setup group, and then click Horizontal.

  5. In the frame, type ABCDE.

  6. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Print.

A frame prints with only the letters "ABC" in a frame that is approximately three lines high.
