Symptoms

When you start Microsoft Management Console (MMC console) such as services.msc or gpedit.msc, you may get the following error message:

One or more ActiveX controls could not be displayed because either: 1) Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page, or 2) You have blocked a publisher of one of the controls. As a result, the page may not display correctly.


Additionally, when you click OK in the error message, you receive the same error message again.

The desktop sidebar gadgets may also stop working and show as black squares with a green vertical line down the center.


Resolution

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. To resolve this issue, follow the steps in the methods below starting with method 1. If method 1 does not resolve the issue go to method 2.

Method 1:


To have us change the registry value for Value data in Zones subkey to 0 for you, go to the "Fix it for me" section. If you prefer to fix this problem yourself, go to the "Let me fix it myself" section.

Fix it for me



To fix this problem automatically, click the Fix it button or link. In the File Download dialog box, click Run and then follow the steps in the Fix it Wizard.




Notes

  • This package will change the registry value for Value data in the Zones subkey to 0 for you.

  • This wizard may be in English only. However, the automatic fix also works for other language versions of Windows.

  • If you are not on the computer that has the problem, save the Fix it solution to a flash drive or a CD and then run it on the computer that has the problem.


Then, go to the "Did this fix the problem?" section.



Let me fix it myself

Edit the registry to change a Value data in the Zones registry setting.

  1. Click Start, and then type regedit in the Search box

  2. Click regedit.exe under Programs

  3. Browse to the following registry key and click on the “0” subkey

  4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0

  5. In the right pane, right-click 1200, and then click Modify

  6. In the Value data box, type either 1 or 0 to overwrite the existing value of 3. Then, click OK

  7. Close the registry editor

  8. Launch an MMC Console to test for the issue


The values 0, 1, and 3 are associated with the following behavior:

  • 0 = Enabled, or the action is permitted

  • 1 = Prompt

  • 3 = Disabled, or the action is not permitted

Note If you type 1 in the Value data box, you will receive the following prompt when you start Microsoft Project:
Do you want to allow software such as ActiveX controls and plug-ins to run?
Additionally, you will receive the following prompt at other times when you use Microsoft Project.
If you do not want to receive this prompt, type 0 in the Value data box.


Method 2:


To have us delete the extra (parasite) zone from the Zones subkey for you, go to the "Fix it for me" section. If you prefer to fix this problem yourself, go to the "Let me fix it myself" section.

Fix it for me



To fix this problem automatically, click the Fix it button or link. In the File Download dialog box, click Run, and then follow the steps in the Fix it Wizard.


Notes

Let me fix it myself

If the issue still exists, please follow the following:

  1. Click Start , click Run , type regedit , and then click OK

  2. Expand the following registry subkey
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones

  3. Delete the extra (parasite) zone from the Zones subkey
    Note: The parasite zone is a pseudo-graphic number listed before zone number 0. The pseudo-graphic number looks like a miniature upper case "L"

  4. Close the registry editor

  5. Launch an MMC Console to test for the issue
