Symptoms

Assume that you have a computer that is running Subsystem for UNIX-based Applications (SUA). The computer is running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

  • Windows 8

  • Windows Server 2012

When you try to run a shell script to create many environment variables, the script fails and you receive an error message that resembles the following:

Cannot Allocate Memory

Note This issue only occurs when the environment variable block size is over 64 kilobytes (KB).

Cause

This issue occurs because the string length that is specified for the RtlSetEnvironmentVar API is incorrect when the environment variable block size is over 64 KB.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running one of the following operating systems:

  • Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)
