Office applications crash on launch at the splash screen

When launching any of the Office 2013 applications, the splash screen will be displayed, but the application will immediately crash. You may receive an error similar to the following one for Word 2013:
  • Microsoft Word has stopped working

This problem has been seen to be caused by certain versions of the third-party DisplayLink User Mode Driver (dlumd32.dll).

To resolve this problem, we recommend that you install the latest version of the DisplayLink Core software from the manufacturer's web site.

You can determine the version of the dlumd32.dll file on your computer in the following location (based on the bitness of your Windows installation):

32-bit (x86): C:\Windows\System32\dlumd32.dll
64-bit (x64): C:\Windows\SysWOW64\dlumd32.dll

Note: To determine the bitness of your Windows installation, right-click Computer and then click Properties.

If you review your application event log, you may find the crashing event (Event ID 1000). The following event is an example crashing event for Word 2013:
