Symptoms

When you use a stylus pen to draw, write, or highlight text in a slide show in PowerPoint 2013, ink mode is not enabled automatically.

Then, when ink mode is enabled, you cannot use touch gestures to interact with the slide show.

Notes

  • You must manually enable ink mode to draw, write, or highlight text.

  • You must manually disable ink mode before you can use touch gestures.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, apply the following updates. After you apply these updates, ink mode is enabled automatically when a stylus pen is close to the screen. Additionally, ink mode is disabled when you move the stylus pen away from the screen.

Important
Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

After you install the updates, the new stylus pen behavior is enabled. However, follow these steps if you do not want ink mode to be enabled and disabled automatically:

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.

  2. Locate and then select the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\PowerPoint\Options\

  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.

  4. Type StylusAutoInk, and then press Enter.

  5. In the Details pane, right-click StylusAutoInk, and then click Modify.

  6. In the Value data box, type 0, and then click OK.

  7. Exit Registry Editor.

Note If you change the value of the StylusAutoInk registry entry to 1, the new stylus pen behavior is enabled.
