Symptoms

When you run Microsoft Host Integration Server 2010, the SNA Server service may intermittently stop responding, and all sessions are closed.

Cause

This problem occurs because incorrect pointer references are present when the 64-bit version of the Host Integration Server 2010 Client is used to connect to the server. In this situation, a bogus new pipe extension message that has an incorrect length field is sent to the server. This causes the server to loop infinitely when it processes the message.

Resolution

Cumulative update information

The fix that resolves this problem is included in cumulative update package 8 for Host Integration Server 2010. For more information about how to obtain the cumulative update package, see Cumulative update package 8 for Host Integration Server 2010.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

More Information

After you apply this update, Host Integration Server 2010 supports the following two new pipe extensions:

  • The Clients MAC address (0x1)

  • The Clients OS information (0x2)

When you encounter this problem, an internal SNA Server trace that is started by using the SNA trace utility may display incorrect extension types in a loop that resembles the following:

Extension type 1h, Extension Length
Client MAC Address 51b391f22510
Extension type F352h, Extension Length 65522
Extension type 1h, Extension Length
Client MAC Address 51b391f22510
Extension type F352h, Extension Length 65522
