Assume that you connect to a SharePoint server through virtual private network (VPN) connections. When you try to open a SharePoint task list in Outlook 2013, the task does not open. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:
We need to get you online so you can do that. Click the File menu in Internet Explorer, turn off Work Offline, and give it another try.

When you click a URL on a web page to open a MHTML file in Excel 2013, the file does not open, and instead you receive an error message that resembles the following:
Unable to read file
When you click the OK button in the dialog box, Excel opens a local cached copy of the file instead.
