Backup application that calls the VSS service becomes unresponsive when the DFSR service is running in Windows

Symptoms
Consider the following scenario:
  • You use a backup application that calls the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) on a computer that's running Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2.
  • The Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) service is running on the computer.

In this scenario, the backup process becomes unresponsive.
Cause
This problem occurs because of a race condition in the DFSR service as it may incorrectly lock a file causing the backup application to become unresponsive.
Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft Support. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
