An error occurs when you use ODBC driver to retrieve sql_variant data in SQL Server 2014 or 2016
Assume that you connect to an instance of SQL Server 2014 or 2016 by using Microsoft ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server. When you execute a query that retrieves data of the sql_variant data type, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
An error encountered: SQLState = HY000, NativeError: 0, ErrorMessage: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver 11 for SQL Server]Protocol error in TDS stream
This problem was fixed in the following cumulative updates for SQL Server:
- Cumulative Update 2 for SQL Server 2016
- Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2014 SP2
- Cumulative Update 8 for SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1
