Enhance your productivity and enjoy streamlined access to the same set of powerful AI tools and web-based services in the sidebar, including Bing Chat, without opening a browser window. If you're running Windows 10 on your PC device, you can now move your Microsoft Edge sidebar to your desktop to directly access sidebar apps and sites without having to open a browser window. This turns on a side-by-side experience with any Windows app—including Microsoft Edge itself.

FAQ's

To move your sidebar to your Windows desktop, you'll need:

  • A device running Windows 10

  • The latest version of Microsoft Edge

This feature is not available for enterprise accounts at this time.

  1. In Microsoft Edge, open the sidebar by pressing Ctrl+ Shift+ (.), or selecting the Bing Chat  icon in the upper right corner of the Microsoft Edge toolbar.

  2. Select the Detach from Edge  icon at the bottom of the sidebar to move the sidebar to your Windows desktop.

  3. Once moved, you can access all your sidebar apps, including Bing Chat and Compose, from your Windows 10 desktop.

Notes:

  • Once moved, the Microsoft Edge sidebar will no longer show in your browser window.

  • All of the same sidebar apps and sites remain the same, regardless of the sidebar location.

  • The sidebar is always connected to your Microsoft Edge profile, so if you've customized your sidebar, the customizations will remain the same.

  • You don't need to be logged in to your Microsoft account to access the sidebar or move it to your desktop.

To remove the sidebar from your desktop:

  • Select the Close and re-attach to Edge  icon at the bottom of the sidebar on your desktop. Your sidebar will be moved to your Microsoft Edge browser.

The sidebar stays where you put it—either in your Microsoft Edge browser or on your Windows desktop the next time you restart your device.

Moving the sidebar to your desktop allows you quick access to our collection of helpful sidebar features and tools, no matter where you are on your device. This includes:

  • Getting answers, itineraries, and compositions with Bing Chat and Compose.

  • Dragging and dropping files into Drop to share across your devices.

  • Searching and accessing your Microsoft 365 files, and other sites you've added to your sidebar.

  • Viewing content from the websites you're visiting—your sidebar remains connected to Microsoft Edge.

No, your sidebar customizations stay with your Microsoft account profile even if you work with two Microsoft accounts, such as a personal and a work account. Just like other Microsoft Edge customizations, such as theme, vertical tabs, and more—your sidebar customizations remain the same when you switch back to using that profile, regardless of the sidebar location.
