How to create a custom chart format in Excel 2007

INTRODUCTION
In Microsoft Office Excel 2007, you can create a custom chart format to produce charts that have a consistent look. This article describes how to create a sample chart, how to use that sample chart to create a custom chart format, and how to apply that custom format to another sample chart.

How to create a sample chart

  1. In Excel, create a new worksheet. Enter the following data in the worksheet.
    A1: BethB1: 95
    A2: JoeB2: 90
    A3: MaryB3: 85
    A4: JohnB4: 80
  2. Select cells A1 to B4, and then press F11.
  3. Format the chart. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. On the Ribbon, click the Design tab, and then click Change Chart Type in the Type group.
    2. In the Change Chart Type dialog box, click Pie in the left pane, and then click OK.
    3. On the Ribbon, click the Layout tab, click Chart Title in the Labels group, and then click Above Chart in the list.
    4. Click anywhere inside the inserted chart title, and then type my custom chart.

How to use the sample chart to create a custom chart format

  1. In Excel, switch to the chart sheet that contains the sample chart.
  2. On the Ribbon, click the Design tab, and then click Save As Template in the Type group.
  3. In the Save Chart Template dialog box, type my custom chart in the File Name box, and then click Save.

    Note The file is saved as a .crtx file to the following location:
    C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\Charts

How to apply a custom chart format to another sample chart

  1. In Excel, create a new worksheet. Enter the following data in the worksheet.
    A1: DavidB1: 95
    A2: JennyB2: 90
    A3: TomB3: 85
    A4: LindaB4: 80
  2. Select cells A1 to B4, and then press F11.
  3. On the Ribbon, click the Design tab, and then click Change Chart Type in the Type group.
  4. In the Change Chart Type dialog box, click Templates in the left pane, click my custom chart in the right pane, and then click OK.
The chart is formatted in the custom chart format.
