FIX: Distribution Agent fails when you try to apply a snapshot for a newly added view in a publication in SQL Server 2005 or in SQL Server 2008

Extended support for SQL Server 2005 ends on April 12, 2016

If you are still running SQL Server 2005 after April 12, 2016, you will no longer receive security updates and technical support. We recommend upgrading to SQL Server 2014 and Azure SQL Database to achieve breakthrough performance, maintain security and compliance, and optimize your data platform infrastructure. Learn more about the options for upgrading from SQL Server 2005 to a supported version here.

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.
Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release.
SYMPTOMS
Consider the following scenario. In Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or in Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you add a view to an existing publication. You specify a snapshot folder location other than the default location. When you try to apply a snapshot for the newly added view, Distribution Agent fails, and the view is not added to the subscriber.

This issue occurs if the default location is inaccessible. The following error messages may be logged in the SQL Server error log:
Error message 1
Source: Merge Replication Provider
Number: -2147201001
Message: The schema script 'snapshot.pre' could not be propagated to the subscriber.
Error message 2
The process could not read file 'Path\snapshot.pre' due to OS error 5.
Error message 3
The process could not read file 'Path\snapshot.pre' due to OS error 2.
Error message 4
The process could not read file 'Path\snapshot.pre' due to OS error 53.
CAUSE
This issue occurs because Distribution Agent still looks for the snapshot in the default location even though you specify a new location.
