Symptoms
Consider the following scenario: Â

You have a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
-
You set the SrvsvcDefaultShareInfo registry entry under the following registry subkey to configure the default share permissions for a network share:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\services\lanmanserver\DefaultSecurity\
-
You restart the computer.
In this scenario, you cannot access an administrative share on the computer. For example, when a user tries to access drive C by using the "\\<computer name>\C$" command, the user receives the following error message:
Windows cannot access \\<computer name>\C$ Check the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. To try to identify and resolve network problem, click Diagnose. Details: Error code: 0x80070005 Access is denied
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix. If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. To have us set the value of the Level2Compatibility registry entry for you, go to the "Fix it for me" section. If you prefer to make this change yourself, go to the "Let me fix it myself" section.

After you install this hotfix, you must make the following changes to the registry to set the value of the Level2Compatibility registry entry to 1:

Click Start, type regedit in the Start search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.

Locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters
-
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD (32-bit) Value.
-
Type Level2Compatibility, and then press ENTER.
-
Right-click Level2Compatibility, and then click Modify.

In the Edit DWORD (32-bit) Value box, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
