Symptoms

On a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista, you receive one of the following Stop error messages when you try to print a document.

Stop 0x0000003B (parameter1, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

Stop 0x0000007f (0x00000000, parameter2, parameter3, parameter4) UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

Note

  • The parameters in these error messages vary, depending on the configuration of the computer.

  • Not all "0x0000003B" and "0x0000007f" Stop error messages are caused by this problem.

Additionally, the computer may restart automatically.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Win32k.sys driver does not verify a device value before the Win32k.sys driver accesses the device. However, the device value is set to 0 by a defective printer driver. This behavior leads to a Divide by Zero Error exception. Therefore, you receive the Stop error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
