Use these options to specify how Microsoft Office Visio maps portable data types to platform-specific types used by your target DBMS.

You can display either portable or physical data types, and you can assign data types to columns.

Show Portable Data Type

Changes the options on the Data Type tab to display the portable data type.

These data types are automatically mapped to corresponding data types in your target DBMS.

User defined

Click a user-defined data type. To define a new data type, on the Database menu, click User-Defined Types.

For object relational models, you can also click a composite type. To define a composite type, drag a Type shape from Object Relational to the drawing page.

Category

Click a portable data type category available in your Visio product.

The data type definition you construct here automatically maps to the nearest native data type of your DBMS.

Type

For the selected category, click an applicable portable data type.

Some values for Type also require Size, Length, Precision, or Scale values.

Size

For the selected category and type, click a size.

Length

Type the number of characters.

Scale

Type the number of digits to the right of the decimal point.

Show Physical Data Type

Changes the options on the Data Type tab to display the native data type based on the default database driver.

Data type

Displays the physical data type (native to the underlying DBMS) that the selected portable data type will map to. You can override this option on a local basis.

Default driver

Displays the default driver. To change the default driver, on the Database menu, point to Options, and then click Drivers.
