You can create a table of figures, for example, a list of illustrations that are included in your document, by applying style to figure captions, and then use those captions to build a table of figures. 

Do any of the following:

Create a table of figures by using built-in styles

  1. Click in your document where you want to insert the table of figures.

  2. On the Insert menu, click Index and Tables, and then click the Table of Figures tab.

  3. In the Caption label box, select Figure.

  4. In the Formats box, select the format you want, for example, Simple.

  5. In the Tab leader box, select the leader style you want (dots, dashes, or a line).

  6. Click Options, and then select the Style check box.

  7. Select OK, then select OK again.

Update a table of figures

If you add more figures to a document with an existing table of figures, you can update the table of figures to include the new items. Word recreates the existing table of figures in order to show the changes. You can update the whole table or just the page numbers.

  1. Press CONTROL, click the table of figures, and then click Update Field.

  2. Click the option that you want.

Change the style for a table of figures

When you change the styles in a table of figures, Word recreates the table of figures in order to show the changes.

  1. Click the table of figures.

  2. On the Insert menu, click Index and Tables, and then select the Table of Figures tab.

  3. Click Options, and then select the Style check box.

  4. On the pop-up menu, select the style name that's used for the figure captions, and then select OK.

  5. In the Formats box, select From template, and then select Modify.

  6. In the Style dialog box, select Modify.

  7. Select the options you want.
