Cut out or cover part of a picture

Windows and macOS both have apps that help you do basic picture editing. 

In Windows, you can use the Paint app to cut out an inner portion of a photo. 

You can delete or erase unnecessary parts of the image. You can also fill the deleted area with an appropriate color.

To cut out part of a picture

  1. Open the Paint app: Select the Windows Start menu, enter Paint in the Search box, then select the Paint app.

  2. In Paint, use File > Open to open the image file.

  3. On the Home tab of the toolbar ribbon, select Select, and then choose Free-form selection.

  4. Click and drag on the image to trace the outline of the area that you want to cut out or cover.

  5. Press the Delete key.

    The marked part of the image is deleted. A white void fills in that space:

To fill the white space

In these steps, you'll use the "eyedropper" color-picker to select a color from the existing image and insert it in the white space.

  1. On the Home tab of the toolbar ribbon, select the color picker  The color-picker in the Paint app.  

  2. Point at the image—specifically at the color you want to paint over the newly created white space.

  3. Click to "absorb" the color.

  4. Point at the white space.

  5. Click to fill the white space with the color you selected in step 3.

If you're unsatisfied with the fill color, you can press Ctrl+Z to undo it, then repeat the steps to select and apply a different color.

On a Mac, use the Preview app to make simple edits on a picture. 

  1. Locate the picture file on your Mac.

  2. Ctrl+click the file, then select Open With > Preview.

  3. Select Show Markup Toolbar  The Show Markup Toolbar button. .

  4. Use the options on the toolbar to edit your picture. Start with the Selection Tools, which let you select a portion of the image in a suitable way:
