Select where to put the check box.

On the Developer tab, select theÂ
  Check Box Content Control. If the Developer tab is missing, see Show or hide the Developer tab. -
To change the X to aÂ
tick or check mark, select the box, and choose  Properties on the Developer tab. -
Under Checked symbol, select Change. Using the Wingdings or Wingdings 2 font, choose the
 check mark character, select OK and OK again.Â
This check box can be checked by mouse click or VBA. Double-click the check box and use the toolbar to change color or size.  To add a static check mark or check box symbol, see Insert a check mark symbol.
Adding a check box isn't possible in Word for the web. You can add a check box in the desktop app.

To open it, at the top of the ribbon, select Editing > Open in Desktop App.

Place your cursor where you want to add a check box.

On the Developer tab, select
 Check Box. Don't have the developer tab, see Show or hide the Developer tab. -
Double-click the check box to set the Check Box Form Field Options.Â
