To use OneDrive, you need:

  1. An active account:

    • Either a Microsoft personal account. Create one.

    • And/or a work or school account. You can multiple work or school accounts with OneDrive, but only one personal account.

  2. A way to access your OneDrive:

    • Either a computer or mobile device with compatible web browser.

    • And/or a computer or mobile device with the OneDrive app.

See below for their minimum requirements:

Important: Beginning January 1, 2022, we are ending support for selected OneDrive desktop apps running on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Learn more.

The OneDrive desktop sync app (available on the download page of the OneDrive website) requires the following:

  • Operating system:

    • 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 10/11, Windows 8/8.1, or Windows 7.


      • The OneDrive sync app isn't supported on Windows XP or Linux.

      • OneDrive sync app functionality is built into Windows 10/11 and Windows 8.1 and supports connecting to OneDrive for work or school to sync your work or school files. For more information, see Sync files with OneDrive in Windows.

      • To share files and folders from File Explorer, you must have Internet Explorer 11 or later.

    • Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 (including R2), or Windows Server 2008 R2.

      Note: As of August 20, 2021, OneDrive will no longer support Windows Server 2008 R2, as it has been out of extended support since January 2020.

    • macOS 11.0 or newer.

      Note: We no longer update or allow new installations of OneDrive on macOS versions older than 10.14. In order to enable OneDrive updates and new installations, we recommend updating to macOS 11.0 or newer.

  • Processor: 1.6 GHz or higher, or Intel-based Mac computer, or a Windows 10/11 ARM-based PC

  • Memory: 1 GB of RAM or higher

  • Resolution: 1024 × 576 minimum

  • Internet connection: High-speed Internet access is recommended.

  • File systems: NTFS or HFS+ (case insensitive) or APFS (case insensitive)

For the best experience on the OneDrive website, we recommend using the latest version of Microsoft Edge, Chrome, Firefox, or Safari.

Important: Microsoft Internet Explorer is no longer a supported browser. To ensure continued access to your OneDrive, please use another browser, such as Microsoft Edge.

The OneDrive mobile app requires one of the following:

  • A phone or tablet with Android 6.0 or later. Get the Android app.

    Note: The Google Play store and the OneDrive app for Android aren't available in China. Also, because is blocked in China by the government firewall, the OneDrive app won't work in China when you sign in with a Microsoft account.

  • An iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 13 or later. Get the iOS app.

Beta or Preview releases

We love early adopters, but PC, Mac, and mobile OS beta releases aren't supported. You'll need to stick with production releases to continue to use OneDrive reliably.

However, if you're keen to always have the latest and greatest, there are two ways to get early access to new features:

  1. Join the OneDrive Preview for Android or OneDrive Preview for iOS.

  2. On your OneDrive desktop app, select Help & Settings > Settings > About and select Get early access.
