Use the information in this article to troubleshoot section incompatibility errors in OneNote 2016 for Windows.

Issue

While using OneNote for Windows, you may encounter either of the following error messages:

  • “This notebook section was created in an older version of OneNote and are incompatible with your cloud notebook. (Error code: 0xE40200AA)”

  • “This section is incompatible with your cloud notebook.”

Background

When a notebook is uploaded to OneDrive or SharePoint, some sections may fail to convert before syncing with the cloud. Fortunately, OneNote saves backup of such failed sections, which you can manually download and then open individually, as needed. Downloaded section files will not be synced with any of your cloud notebooks.

Resolution

Do the following:

  1. When prompted, click the text “To view its contents, click here to download and then open the section as a local file.”

  2. When the section has been downloaded successfully, OneNote will confirm that “Your section file was downloaded successfully. Would you like to open it now?” To open the section from the local file, click Yes.

  3. You can now freely copy and paste any of the content or pages from the downloaded section file into any of your other notebooks.
