In October 2018, we announced several important changes to your Office 365 subscription. As part of these changes, there is no longer a limit to the number of devices where you can install Office. Instead, you can install Office on all your devices and be signed in to five at the same time. This includes any combination of PCs, Macs, tablets, and phones.

This change requires that you sign in to activate and use Office on a device. If you're using Office but aren't signed in, you'll be prompted to sign in. The sign-in prompts are rolling out slowly, so you might see prompts on one device but not another until the change is rolled out for all subscribers.

After you sign in, you won't be prompted to sign in again unless you sign out. If you still see repeated prompts after signing in, please let us know

This isn't my email address

We display the account that was used to install Microsoft 365 on your device. If you have your own Microsoft 365 subscription, you can sign in with your own Microsoft account. Select Continue, and then select Sign in with a different Microsoft account.

I want to use a different email address with Office

If the address that's shown is yours, but you no longer use that address, you can contact Microsoft Support to switch your Microsoft 365 subscription to a different email address.

I share this device with other users

If this is an Microsoft 365 Family subscription, ask the person who owns the subscription to share Office 365 Home with you. You'll be able to sign in using your own Microsoft account. To do this, select Continue, and then select Sign in with a different Microsoft account.

Common questions about signing in to Office

What if I don't want to store my documents in the cloud?

Signing into Microsoft 365 doesn't change where you store your documents. When you save a document, you can choose where to save it.

What happens if I don't sign in or I prefer to work offline

Microsoft 365 is a subscription service that needs to connect to the Internet at least once every 30 days. If you don't sign in, Microsoft 365 will prompt you periodically to sign in.

I signed in. Should I stay signed in?

We recommend staying signed in to Microsoft 365. If you sign out, Microsoft 365 will prompt you periodically to sign in.

What happens if I sign out of Microsoft 365?

You might lose some subscription features if you sign out. We recommend that you stay signed in to Microsoft 365 on the devices you use the most.

How do I know this prompt is legitimate?

This prompt is built into Microsoft 365. If you prefer to sign in to Microsoft 365 without using the new prompt, go to File > Account and select Sign in.

Office keeps prompting me to sign in after I've signed in

This can happen if you have multiple Office apps open. Please sign in and then close all Office apps. You shouldn't be prompted again when you restart an Office app. If you're still seeing multiple prompts after you've signed, please leave us a comment and describe when the prompts occur.

If you still see repeated prompts after signing in, please let us know

After you sign in, you shouldn't be prompted to sign in again the next time you open an Office app. If see more sign-in prompts, please do the following:

  1. Sign in again to dismiss the prompt.
