Import Gmail contacts

Here's the most common way you can import Gmail contacts into Outlook. Other contact files can be done the same way by converting them into a .csv file, then importing them into Outlook.

First step: Export

  1. On your Gmail Contact page, select Export.

  2. Under Export as, select Outlook CSV > Export.

You now have a CSV file you can open in Excel. It's best to edit your data in the file before importing the data into Outlook. Also, contact pictures are not exported.

Second step: Import

  1. In Outlook, select FileOpen & Export > Import/Export.

  2. Select Import from another program or file > Next.

  3. Select Comma Separated Values > Next.

  4. Select Browse, go to your saved .csv file, and select it.

  5. Select how you want Outlook to handle duplicate contacts:

    • Replace duplicates with items imported

    • Allow duplicates to be created

    • Do not import duplicate items

  6. Select Next.

  7. In the Import a File box, select Contacts > Next.

    • There is an option to Map Custom Fields if you want to manually change how the data is imported.

  8. Select Finish.

  9. To view your imported contacts, select People.
