You can disable the dark page background in Dark Mode and keep the page light. You can toggle the Switch Backgrounds button in the ribbon. Upon leaving and returning to any Word for the web document, Word will remember and apply your choice (per unique browser).

You can personalize the color or accent color for window title bars and borders, the Start button, or the taskbar. The Dark mode has colors that are designed to work well in a low-lit environment. This option is for the Start menu, taskbar, and action center.

You can choose your desktop background and change it at any time. Select Start > Settings > Personalization > Background. In the list next to Personalize your background, select Picture, Solid color, Slideshow, or Windows Spotlight (to see a new image from around the world every day).

Important: By default, Word and Outlook recolor your documents and e-mails to match the rest of the application when in Black theme. To disable this behavior in Word, navigate to File > Options > General > Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office, then check Never change the document page color.

Microsoft Edge. The dark theme changes the default bright background color in the new Microsoft Edge to a darker color, which is easier on the eyes in low-light environments or if you prefer less bright interfaces. Here's how to activate dark mode: Go to Settings and more > Settings.

The Office theme is the color scheme for your entire Office program, while document themes are more specific (they show up in individual Access or Outlook files). In addition, you can add a pattern to your Office program, by changing the Office Background.
