Note The Splwow64.exe process is used to translate the driver model of a 64-bit operating system and a 32-bit program. Splwow64.exe is used to support the Printer Driver Isolation feature. The 32-bit version of Windows 8 has its own Splwow64.exe file, and the 32-bit version of Splwow64.exe is also affected by this issue.

Fixes an issue in which you cannot run a self-expanding .exe file that is created in Windows 8 or in Windows Server 2012. This issue occurs when you try to run the file on a computer that is running Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, or a version of Windows that is earlier than Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008.

For example, the file system filter driver denies the execution of an .exe file. When you try to run the file later, the file does not start as expected. If you check the Explorer.exe process in the Process Explorer utility, you find that the .exe file leaks a handle in the Explorer.exe process. Resolution Hotfix information
