Start Excel in Safe mode by going to the Windows 8 Start screen and clicking Run. Type excel /safe in the dialog box. If Excel starts in Safe mode, begin disabling add-ins one at a time. Click on the File tab and then click Options. When the Options menu appears, click on Add-Ins.

Safe mode. Description. Automated safe mode. When you start a program and a problem is detected, the program goes into this mode. The problem is fixed or isolated. The program can start successfully. User-initiated safe mode. You can start a program in this mode to try to resolve certain problems.
