The Kinect camera is active only if you’ve turned on Kinect. The camera doesn’t work—and apps can’t access it—if you’ve turned off or disconnected your Kinect. A light near the camera lens on the left side of the sensor indicates when Kinect is on and ready to capture video or still images.
