Step 1: Save your Excel workbook as a .csv file. Outlook can import comma separated value (.csv) files, but not workbooks with multiple sheets, so step 1 is saving your Excel workbook as a .csv file.

Note: The Name field doesn't appear in the To box because Outlook reserves the first row of a named range for field names. If the range that you import does not contain field names, the first row of data will be interpreted as field names and will not be imported as data.

If Outlook won't open, try opening it in safe mode, which disables add-ins. 1. Right-click the Start button, and click Run.. 2. Type Outlook.exe /safe, and click OK.. Tip: If Windows can't find Outlook.exe /safe, try using the full path to Outlook (for example C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OfficeXX, where XX is your version number). Using a command-line switch doesn't mean you have to type the whole startup command at the command prompt. You can start the Office app as usual, by clicking the program icon on the desktop, or by clicking the program name on the Start menu. All startup methods essentially do the same thing: they run the app's .exe file, even if you don't actually type the command or even see it.

Note: If the file doesn't have UTF-8 encoding, the import tool may not recognize and display all text correctly.The import tool will then show you some example contacts from your file, and you can check that the text is readable and correct. If the text is not displayed correctly, select Cancel.You will need a file in UTF-8 encoding to continue.

Typically, you can import contacts without worrying about the underlying details of how the text is stored in the CSV file. However, if the contact information includes characters not found in the English alphabet, such as Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, or Japanese characters, this can cause problems when importing contacts.
