Add words like proper names or technical terms to your spell check dictionary or create and edit a new custom dictionary.

In the Replace box, type a word or phrase that you often misspell. In the With box, type the correct spelling of the word. Select Add. For more info on the AutoCorrect tab, see AutoCorrect options. Note:

You can add words to the dictionary or use the language dialog to choose a language for the selected text. Go to Review > Language > Set Proofing Language. Note: Languages in use in the document display at the top. Languages with downloaded proofing tools have a checkmark symbol.

In the Manage Spell Checking page, you can add spell checking exceptions, which are words or phrases that should be excluded from spell checking.

Open the three-dot menu for other options (e.g., Ignore, Add to Dictionary, Show context, Show synonyms). Note: In Word for the web, you can customize your preferences for Editor settings. Go to Review > Editor > Editor Settings. These settings apply only when the Editor panel is closed.

To skip a misspelled word in all documents, click Add to add it to the dictionary. This only works for misspelled words. You can’t add custom grammar to the dictionary. After you correct, ignore, or skip an error, Word moves to the next one.

This article addresses common problems and helps you make sure your text is identified with the correct language; that the correct language dictionary is being used to check your spelling and grammar; and that the automated language tools in Office are enabled.
