When you open a workbook that has been corrupted, Excel automatically starts File Recovery mode and attempts to reopen and simultaneously repair the workbook. Excel cannot always start File Recovery mode automatically.

When Microsoft Excel detects a corrupted workbook upon opening, it automatically starts File Recovery mode and attempts to repair the workbook. If File Recovery mode doesn’t start, try using this manual process to recover your workbook: Click File > Open.

Open the following registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.8\shell\Open\command. In the right pane, click (Default). On the Edit menu, click Modify. Remove the %1 from the end of the Value data string so that the data string reads as follows: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\EXCEL.EXE" /e (including the quotation marks)
