Symptoms. Windows 10 deployments using the Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) build 8456 fail when used with the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) for Windows 10, version 2004. The BIOS firmware type is incorrectly identified as UEFI resulting in failures when refreshing an existing computer with a new version of Windows.

The enablement package is a great option for installing a scoped feature update like Windows 10, version 21H2 as it enables an update from version 2004, or 20H2, or 21H1 to version 21H2 with a single restart, reducing update downtime. This enables devices to take advantage of new features now.

For admins who manually install updates, the new .exe package is the best option. Note: This new packaging is for SUs and hotfixes only. It does not apply to Cumulative Updates (CUs) or Interim Updates (IUs). CUs already check for the proper permissions before allowing Setup to proceed.
