Symptoms

Consider the following scenario.

  • You insert a DVD-RW disk on a computer that is running Windows 7.

  • You format the disk in the Live File System (LFS) format.

  • After the wizard is finished, you repeatedly write and delete data from the disk.

In this scenario, writing to the disk fails randomly, and you receive an "Access Denied" error message. When the write fails, all successive writes will also fail.

Cause

This problem occurs because of a race condition in the Universal Disc File System (UDFS) driver. If a write occurs during the background format process is completing, the write will fail. The failure causes UDFS to mark the DVD as corrupted and read-only. Therefore, all write operations after this will fail.

Resolution

Files that have already been written to the disk can be read without problems. To write to the DVD-RW disk again, reformat the disk.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
