Why am I over my storage limit?

You could be over your storage limit for any or all of the following reasons:

How can I get back within my storage limit?

You have a few options:

  • Buy additional storage. You can buy 100 GB of standalone OneDrive storage, or you can get 1 TB (1000 GB) of OneDrive storage with Microsoft 365. Microsoft 365 also includes the new Office 2016 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more) and 60 monthly Skype minutes.

  • Remove enough files from your OneDrive to get below your storage limit. View the largest files in your OneDrive.

How long can I remain over my storage limit?

If you are over your storage limit due to a lapse in your Microsoft 365 subscription or because your promotional storage has expired, you can remain over your storage limit for a 3-month grace period. If you're over your storage limit due to changes in OneDrive storage limits, you can remain over your storage limit for a 9-month grace period.

What happens if I remain over my storage limit after the grace period?

After the grace period, if you're still over your storage limit, your account will be frozen. When your account is frozen, you won't be able to access the content in your OneDrive until your account is unfrozen. If your account remains frozen, your OneDrive will be scheduled for deletion. You will have at least 3 months to unfreeze your account. We’ll also let you know via email the specific date after which your OneDrive may be deleted. You can also check the status of your OneDrive account and any applicable dates on your storage page.
