Consider the following scenario:
You apply a retention policy to a primary mailbox in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environment. The policy moves messages to an archive mailbox.
You manually execute the retention policy on the mailbox, or the retention policy automatically processes the mailbox. Messages that reach retention age are moved to the archive mailbox.
In this scenario, a copy of the archived items remains in the Deletions subfolder of the Recoverable Items folder in the primary mailbox until the retention period is reached.
Note To view the Deletions subfolder of the Recoverable Items folder in the primary mailbox, use the Recover Deleted Items tool in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Web App.
This issue occurs because the Managed Folder Assistant copies items to the Deletions subfolder in the primary mailbox when the items are automatically moved to the archive mailbox.
To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:
