A DFS link that points to a WebDav resource stops working in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a DFS Namespace that contains one or more DFS links that point to a Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) resource. For example, the DFS links point to a Microsoft SharePoint server.

  • On a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, you start the WebClient service, and then you click one of the DFS links.

Note If the client computer is running Windows Server 2008 R2, you must install the Desktop Experience feature on the computer. This is because the WebClient service, which you need to access WebDAV shares, is included in the Desktop Experience feature.

In this scenario, the DFS link stops working after some time. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

The network path was not found.

Notes

  • When this issue occurs, the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path of the WebDav resource still works.

  • When this issue occurs, you can temporarily restore access to the WebDAV resource by using one of the following methods:

    • Run the dfsutil cache provider flush command to flush the provider cache.

    • Click the Check Status button on the DFS tab in the Folder Properties window.

Cause

This issue occurs because the path of the WebDAV resource is not assembled correctly.
