Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You sign in to a Microsoft Lync 2010 client, and then you open a conversation.

  • You add an emoticon to the conversation.

  • You click the emoticon, and then you click the Formatting button (A) to display the format text table.

In this scenario, the Lync 2010 client crashes and causes an access violation.

Cause

This issue occurs because the highlighted emoticon is incorrectly treated as a text object. This is incorrect because emoticons are actually control objects. Changes to the font settings are not allowed on control objects.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following cumulative update:

2496325 Description of the cumulative update package for Lync 2010: April 2011

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
