Symptoms

After you add a word to the AutoCorrect Exceptions list in Microsoft Word, the word may still be automatically corrected when you type it. This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • You add a word to the Don't correct list on the Other Corrections tab.

  • The word you added to the Don't correctlist is contained in the AutoCorrect list.

Cause

The entries in the Don't correct list apply only to words that are corrected by the spelling dictionary that is used in Microsoft Word. Words contained in the AutoCorrect list are always corrected when the Replace text as you type check box is selected.

Workaround

To prevent this problem, use one of the following methods:

  • If the word is contained in the AutoCorrect list, do not add it to the Don't correct list. Instead, remove the word from the AutoCorrect list. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Word 2003 and Word 2002On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.Word 2007Click the Microsoft Office Button, clickWord Options, select Proofing in the left pane, and then click AutoCorrect Options in theAutoCorrect Options section.

    2. On the AutoCorrect tab, select the word in the AutoCorrect list, and then click Delete.

  • To prevent Word from automatically correcting a specific word that is contained in the dictionary that is being used, turn on theAutomatically use suggestions from the spelling checkeroption. Then add the word that you do not want corrected to the Don't correct list. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Word 2003 and Word 2002On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect Options.Word 2007Click the Microsoft Office Button, clickWord Options, select Proofing in the left pane, and then click AutoCorrect Options in theAutoCorrect Options section.

    2. On the AutoCorrect tab, click to select the Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker check box.

    3. Click Exceptions.

    4. On the Other Corrections tab, type the word that you do not want Word to correct in theDon't correct box, and then click Add.

    5. Click OK to close the AutoCorrect Exceptions dialog box.

    6. Click OK to close the AutoCorrect dialog box.

  • To prevent Word from automatically correcting any word that is contained in the dictionary that is being used, turn off the Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker option. To do this, click AutoCorrect Options on the Tools menu. On the AutoCorrect tab, click to clear the Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker check box.
