Can I recover videos and recordings in Clipchamp?

While it is possible to recover lost videos in Clipchamp in some cases, it's unfortunately not possible in others.

As a general rule:

  • Enable Content Backup in editing projects to automatically back up media files in the cloud, if this feature is part of your plan. This is the most convenient option to avoid losing media files and ensures Clipchamp can load them into editing projects consistently.

  • Alternatively, make sure to keep backup copies of your original media files on your computer, an external drive or online storage.

This is useful if you get asked to locate files in Clipchamp. See "Why do I need to locate my files" for situations where this can be required.

Ways to recover media files

If you deleted the original media files, check if they're still available in your operating system's recycle bin and if possible, recover them from there.

If you recorded webcam videos or screen recordings in Clipchamp, before they appear on the editing timeline, there should be a Save File dialogue getting shown where you can download the original recording as a WebM file. Make sure to keep these files as a backup so you can search for them if required. If there was no Save File dialogue, it's likely that they were automatically placed in your computer's Downloads folder. For instance, this is the case if you're using the Clipchamp Windows app and recorded a webcam or screen capture.

For videos and images that you originally took on your phone, check if they are still available on that device, possibly in the camera roll's Recently Deleted folder.

Unfortunately for other cases, recovering of video files won't be possible if you're using Clipchamp without Content Backup enabled and have deleted or lost the original files from your computer.
