Characters in an .xps file that is created in Windows XP are garbled in print output in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Symptoms

You have a .xps file that was created in Windows XP. When you print the file on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2, the print output is garbled.

Notes

  • This issue occurs only on the print output of the .xps file.

  • This issue does not occur when you open the .xps file by using the XPS viewer.

Cause

This issue occurs because the glyph index in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 differs from the glyph index in Windows XP.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

    Version

    Product

    Milestone

    Service branch

    6.1.760
    0.20xxx

    Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

    RTM

MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are very important to maintaining the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
