Copilot in PowerPoint helps you create, edit, and refine presentations with AI assistance. You can choose between different AI models—including Claude from Anthropic and ChatGPT from OpenAI—to power your Copilot experience when making changes directly in your presentation.

Important: Using the model switcher when editing with Copilot in PowerPoint requires a commercial Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription.

Use ChatGPT or Claude with Copilot in PowerPoint

ChatGPT and Claude are AI models you can select when editing with Copilot in PowerPoint. They can help you create slides, add content, summarize presentations, and refine your deck.

Note: For enterprise customers, your admin must enable Anthropic as a sub-processor in the Microsoft 365 admin center before Claude is available as a model option.

1. Open PowerPoint and sign in to your Microsoft 365 account

2. Select Home > Copilot to open the Copilot pane

3. Make sure you’re in editing mode. You’ll know editing mode is active when you see the PowerPoint selector in the Copilot chat box.

4. Select the AI model switcher to see available models. Choose from the available options, including Auto (which lets Copilot pick the best model), ChatGPT, or Claude. If you don’t see the model switcher in the chat box, check the Settings menu — it may have moved there.

5. Describe what you want to do in the input field — for example, “Create a presentation about Q3 results,” “Add a summary slide,” or “Summarize this presentation.”

What you can do with Copilot in PowerPoint

With your chosen AI model, you can ask Copilot to help with tasks such as:

  • Create a presentation — Generate a full deck from a topic or prompt

  • Add a slide — Insert new slides with content tailored to your deck

  • Summarize this presentation — Get a concise summary of your deck’s content

  • Rewrite or refine content — Improve text on your slides for clarity and tone

Notes and limitations

Note: Your model choice is only for the active session. When you close PowerPoint or end your session, Copilot reverts to Auto.

  • The model switcher is available when Copilot is in editing mode (indicated by the PowerPoint selector in the chat box).

  • Not all models may be available in all regions or for all subscription types.

  • Different models may produce different results for the same prompt. Try switching models if you’d like to compare outputs.
