Microsoft Education activities like 365 documents or Microsoft Assignments can be assigned in the Canvas Assignments list or as a Module item.
How to assign a Microsoft Education activity in Canvas
1. Log in to your Canvas account.
2. Navigate to Assignments or Modules in the primary menu of a Course.
3. Find the More (...) menu dropdown in the top right corner of the toolbar next to the new Assignment or Module button. Choose Microsoft Education.
4. From the Microsoft Education create dialog, choose the document or Microsoft Assignment type you would like to create.
5. Depending on the activity you have selected, fill out the title, description and due date fields for the assigned item.Â
Assigning a templated Microsoft 365 Document from your OneDriveClicking the Select OneDrive file button allows you to select an existing file from your OneDrive and share it as an editable template where each student in the class gets their own copy to fill and submit. Enter the title, description, and due date for the submittable file template.

Use the Attach, New and Learning Accelerator menus to attach M365 documents for your students to reference or to fill and submit, and attach Learning Accelerators to support reading, math, writing/citations, and presentations. Â
You can also attach existing files, links, or assignment integrations and create and name a new file right from here for students to turn in
Note:Â You can add up to five files for students to edit. The total number of resources you can add to an assignment is 10, whether editable or non-editable. Read-only reference files can be up to 500 MB in size. Files for students to edit can be up to 50 MB in size.

Select Attach to attach resources to the assignment. Choose a file from your OneDrive, upload a file from your device, or choose one of the other options set by your admin, such as MakeCode.

Select +New to create a blank Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), or Whiteboard document, or a new video recording to hand out to your students.
To let students edit a separate copy of one or more of the attached file, select More options> Students edit their own copy. This way, students can edit their own copy of the file and turn it in for a grade. Only Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), WhiteBoard, ClassNotebook Page, and MakeCode files or Reading Progress assignments allow students to edit their own copies. -
Select Learning Accelerators to add Reading Progress, Speaker Progress, Math Progress, or Search Progress Learning Accelerators to the Assignment.

By default, Students can't edit and submit attached documents, meaning the document is read-only. This is a great option for reference materials.
Finish creating the assignment by choosing the Save button. Once the assignment is created, it will appear in the Assignments list or Module items list in Canvas.
ÂPublishing the assignment in Canvas
After successfully linking your assignment, you can choose to publish in Canvas.
The educator can now see completion and return status summary for their class in Canvas.

How to copy content from one course to another

Educators can copy an assignment from another Team or Canvas course using the From Existing action available when adding a new Microsoft Education activity to your Course. Select the existing Team or course containing the assignment you wish to copy, and click the

Educators can copy an assignment to another course or module in Canvas, or export it for another educator to import into their course using the Move To, Send To or Copy To options in the Canvas menu. When you access the assignment in the new place it will be copied and you may be prompted to confirm t the assignment due date, points, category and to publish the assignment in the new course.
The new copy is now ready for you students to launch.

How to complete a Microsoft assignment
1. Choose your assignment from a list of upcoming assignments or module items. You'll be able to see the status of your assignment including a due date and points possible.
2. Click on items in the Reference Materials or My Work sections to review or complete them. The More (...) menu for each item will allow you to open in a new tab or download as appropriate for the item type.
3. If your educator specified a document for you to turn in, or if you have other files to attach to this assignment, select +Add work and upload your file. You can attach up to 10 resources to an assignment. 500mb is the maximum file size for a resource.
Tip: Work on Office files associated with this assignment right from here—no need to leave the app. Older files with .doc, .xls, and .ppt file extensions can only be edited in the desktop versions of those apps. You can copy content into a new file created in Teams to edit them again.
5. Once you have completed all of the items in the My Work section and attached anything additional your instructor has requested, select Turn in to submit an assignment before its deadline. This button will change depending on the status:

Turn in again if you're editing an assignment you've already turned in and need to submit work again.

Turn in late if you're turning in your assignment after the due date, but your educator has allowed late turn-ins or asked for a revision.

Not turned in if the assignment is past due and your educator is no longer accepting turn-ins. You cannot turn in work.

Undo turn in if you decide you want to edit your assignment before the due date. You'll need to turn it in again after you make your edits.
After submitting your assignments, track your progress in the Canvas Grades tab to review points earned and educator feedback.
