Dragon Copilot overview
Note
The features and functionality available to you might vary based on your organization's configuration.
- Recording is done exclusively in Dragon Copilot for Epic Rover, iOS or Android.
- AI functionality for generating nursing notes, querying and summarizing session transcripts, and accessing trusted clinical information is available exclusively in the Dragon Copilot app (web, desktop, and mobile).
Epic Rover mobile app: Microsoft Dragon Copilot’s ambient documentation, in Epic Rover, captures your patient observations and assessments and converts them into draft flowsheet entries. Simply record your observations aloud, and AI populates the flowsheet data—so you can focus on patient care. Afterward, review, edit, and file the AI-generated documentation in Rover or Hyperspace.
Dragon Copilot app (web, desktop, and mobile): The Microsoft Dragon Copilot app brings recorded patient interactions together in a patient‑centric experience on web, desktop, and mobile. While recordings are completed in Dragon Copilot for Epic Rover, the Dragon Copilot app (desktop, web, and mobile) lets you review recent interactions, generate narrative nurse notes, query transcripts, and access clinical information in one place supporting recall, follow‑up, and documentation across the shift.
Record in the Epic Rover mobile app
Important
- Before your shift, confirm you have a supported mobile device available for recording, based on your organization’s workflow.
- Patient consent must be obtained ahead of ambient usage. Always follow your organization’s guidelines to obtain patient consent before using Dragon Copilot.
Record from Epic Rover: Follow your Epic Rover instructions to locate the patient and start a new ambient recording.
- Depending on your organization's settings, recording might start automatically. If not, go to Ambient Documentation and tap Record at the bottom of the screen.
- When the recording starts, a timer appears and starts counting up.
Pause and Resume: Use pause and resume to add documentation incrementally or handle interruptions during recording.
- Tap the pause action next to the timer to pause a recording. Tap Resume to continue recording.
Complete recording: Tap "Stop" to end the recording, which will send the results to the appropriate flowsheets in your EHR for review.
Note
- The maximum supported recording length is 120 minutes.
- A recording can stay paused for up to 60 minutes. If you don't resume within this time, the app automatically saves and sends results to the appropriate flowsheets for your review as if you selected Stop.
Dragon Copilot for Epic Rover tabs
Preview: Before recording, the Preview tab shows ambient-enabled flowsheet templates you can use and active LDAs available for the patient. When you pause, any template with extracted observations moves to the top and opens automatically, so you get a faster, clearer view of what you captured and what still needs documentation. The tab might take a few moments to populate after pausing. Use the preview to identify missing or incomplete details and add information as needed to finalize documentation.
Transcript: When you pause a recording, the Transcript tab displays the conversation so far, identifying you as "user" and the patient as "other."
- You can access this tab only when the recording is paused within Dragon Copilot for Epic Rover.
- After selecting Stop to finalize the recording, you can retrieve the transcript in Epic Rover or Hyperspace or in the Dragon Copilot web/desktop/mobile app.
Guide: The Guide tab, available anytime during an active or paused recording, provides visual flowsheet guidance to help you complete documentation effectively.
Microsoft Dragon Copilot app
You can dock the Dragon Copilot app alongside your EHR (while using web/desktop version), so you can ask questions or generate notes while charting.
Note
Depending on your organization, you may see Dragon Copilot embedded within your EHR (web or desktop) as a sidebar or integrated window.
Generate nurse notes
To generate a nurse note, select a patient and locate the relevant interaction under Recent patient interactions, then select
to create a nurse note for that interaction.
Dragon Copilot generates a single narrative-style nurse note based on the transcript from that interaction. Before using the note, review and edit it to make sure it reflects your clinical judgment and documentation standards. You can add, remove, or adjust content as needed. When you’re done editing, copy the note into the EHR.
Note
The generated nurse notes don't include flowsheet data, EHR fields, or information from other sessions or shifts.
Query and summarize the transcript
After recording patient interactions in Epic, use Dragon Copilot to ask questions and summarize transcripts. This way, you can quickly recall key details without reviewing every transcript.
- Complete a recording in Epic Rover, and then open the patient in Dragon Copilot.
- From the patient view, open Copilot chat.
- Ask a question or request a summary about the patient’s transcripts.
- Review the response and copy it for documentation or handoff notes.
Use the Prompt Library
From the patient view, select
to open the Prompt Library. Select a prompt, and run it in Copilot chat to generate a response based on the patient’s transcripts for the current shift. These admin-created prompts align to local workflows. If your admin doesn't create any prompts, the prompt library icon may be hidden (if diabled by your administrator)
Information Assist
Information Assist is a built-in AI knowledge assistant in Dragon Copilot that provides quick, evidence-based answers to clinical questions without disrupting workflow.
To access Information Assist, select a patient from the home page, open Copilot chat, and enter a clinical question in natural language.
- It uses vetted sources, such as CDC, FDA, MedlinePlus, MSD Manuals, DailyMed, Clinical Coder references, and Safeguarded global search when enabled.
- Administrators manage sources and access. You can refine sources in settings.
- Dragon Copilot intelligently routes questions based on intent:
- Patient specific questions are answered using recorded transcripts.
- General clinical knowledge questions are answered by Information Assist using trusted sources.
Dragon Copilot automatically routes patient‑specific questions to transcripts and general clinical knowledge questions to Information Assist, including multi‑intent queries that combine patient context and clinical knowledge in a single response. If needed, you can enable safeguarded global search to broaden results while maintaining compliance. Clinical Coder Integration extends Information Assist by surfacing coding‑relevant context linked to original spoken documentation—supporting review and traceability without modifying nurse notes or EHR records.
Review and file ambient data
After you finish recording in Dragon Copilot for Epic Rover, the AI processes the data and organizes the values into the appropriate flowsheet sections.
Select patient: Follow Epic directions to select a patient and review AI-extracted observations in either Rover or Hyperspace.
Review AI-generated flowsheet content: The flowsheets clearly mark unvalidated AI-generated values. You can perform a quick review of the ambient source without leaving the flowsheet. Review all values within the flowsheets and make any necessary edits.
- Mobile (Rover): To view the ambient source on mobile, tap an AI-generated value. You might need to select an option or button to show the source.
- Desktop (Hyperspace): To view the ambient source on desktop, select the row in the assessment that corresponds to the value you want to review. The source automatically displays in a sidebar window.
Note
- The ambient source is available only before filing. It disappears once you file your flowsheet.
- Only values generated by Dragon Copilot AI display their source. Values obtained through other methods aren't associated with Dragon Copilot and don't display.
View transcript: Refer to the transcript in either Rover or Hyperspace as needed to view the full recounting of the recorded conversation.
File: File your assessment.
Copy AI‑generated content from web/desktop/mobile to the EHR: Use the Copy icon to transfer AI‑generated content, such as nurse notes or information from Information Assist, directly into the EHR.
