Emojis are displayed as square boxes in Microsoft Office applications such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook on Windows 7.
This issue affects all Office users on Windows 7, except for the following:
Office 365 subscribers who have Office 2016 version 16.0.8067.2032 or a later version (currently released to Office Insiders) installed
This issue occurs because the Segoe UI Emoji font is missing in Windows 7.
To resolve this issue, upgrade to the following software versions:
Current Channel: Office 2016 subscribers (Office 365) and non-subscribers who have the Click-to-Run version installed on Windows 7 must update to Version 1704 (Build 8067.2115) or later (April 2017 monthly updates).
First Release for Deferred Channel: Office 365 customers in the First Release for Deferred Channel will obtain the fix in the Fall.
Microsoft Office 2016 who receive updates through Windows Installer technology (MSI): Download KB 3203471 to install the update to the Segoe UI Emoji font.
Microsoft Office 2013 users who have Click-to-Run version installed in Windows 7 or who receive updates through Windows Installer technology (MSI): We are currently working on an update to the Segoe UI Emoji font. In the meantime, you can upgrade to Windows 10 which contains the Segoe UI Emoji font.
Note Outlook 2016 and Word 2016 users who have updated to the versions that contain the fix won’t see the square boxes when they insert emojis. Message or document recipients who don't have the updated Office 2016 version on Windows 7, or who have not upgraded to Windows 10, will continue to see emojis rendered as square boxes.
