This article describes an issue when an application calls the BackupRead function to back up files that are shared by using the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol in Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, or Windows Server 2012. A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. The hotfix has a prerequisite.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You run an application on a computer that is running Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, or Windows Server 2012.

  • The application calls the BackupRead function to back up files on a remote server that is running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Server 2003 SP2, and the files are shared by using the SMB protocol.

In this scenario, the BackupRead function randomly fails, and you receive the following error message that is returned by the BackupRead function:

Error code 58 ERROR_BAD_NET_RESP
The specified server cannot perform the requested operation

Resolution

To resolve this issue in Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2, install the update rollup 2975719, or install the hotfix that is described in the "Hotfix information" section.

To resolve this issue in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, install the hotfix that is described in the "Hotfix information" section.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisite

Restart requirement

You have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.
