Symptoms

When you try to assign a default company to a Microsoft Business Solutions - Business Portal user, you may receive an error message that resembles the following error message:

Notes

  • There are variations of the wording of this error message.

  • The error message may not occur for all users. The user who receives the error message may be able to assign the default company if another administrator creates that user.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

To assign a default company to a Business Portal user, make sure that you are assigned to the Administrative role for All Companies. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In Business Portal, click Site Settings, point to Users and Permissions, and then click Manage Business Portal Users.

  2. Select the Business Portal user who is assigning the default company, and then click the Roles tab.

  3. Make sure that the Roles tab references the following information for the user who is assigning the default company.

Company

Administrator

N/A

All Companies

Method 2

Make sure that you have one of the following service packs installed:

  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2

  • Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2

To verify the service pack version that you have installed, follow these steps:

  1. On the computer that is running Internet Information Services (IIS), click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.

  2. Click Change or Remove Programs.

  3. In the program list, click either Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Portal Server 2003.

  4. To view the version information, click Click here for support information.

    Notes

    • The version number for Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 is 11.0.7969.0.

    • The version number for SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2 is 11.0.8126.0.

Method 3

On the Business Portal computer, add the user who is receiving the error message to the local administrators group. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.

  2. Expand Local Users and Groups, click Groups, and then double-click Administrators.

  3. Click Add.

  4. In the Enter the object name to select box, type the name of the user, click OK, and then click OK again.

  5. Close the Computer Management window.

Method 4

The Business Portal user to whom the company is being assigned can start Business Portal and assign the default company. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Start Business Portal.

  2. On the Home page, click My Settings, and then click the company name in the Which company do you usually log in to? box.
