Symptoms
Consider the following scenario on a computer that is running Windows Vista:

You have an Advanced Systems Format (.asf) file that contains an audio stream.
-
The audio stream uses a custom language ID that is not specified in Request for Comments (RFC) 1766.
-
You play the .asf file in a Windows Media Foundation-based application, such as Windows Media Player.
In this scenario, the application does not play the .asf file. For example, you use Windows Media Player to play the .asf file. However, "Media Changing" is displayed for several minutes in the status bar. Eventually, Windows Media Player becomes unresponsive or returns the following error message:
The file you are attempting to play has an extension (.asf) that does not match the file format. Playing the file may result in unexpected behavior.
Resolution
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.
