FIX: Stop errors occur when you start the Windows 7 installation process by using an image that has Windows XP mode preinstalled

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You build a Windows 7 operating system installation image that has Windows XP mode preinstalled.

  • You use the image to start the Windows 7 installation process.

In this scenario, you receive various Stop error codes during the startup process. Therefore, you cannot install the Windows 7 operating system as expected.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Usbrpm.sys driver is unloaded while its work items are queued or are running.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, apply this hotfix to the Windows 7 installation image. After you do this, the Usbrpm.sys driver is not unloaded until its work items finish.

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that described in this article. Restart information

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Instructions for how to apply the hotfix package

To apply this hotfix package, follow these steps:

  1. Download all the necessary files and tools. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Install the Windows 7 OEM Preinstallation Kit (OPK).

    2. Copy the hotfix package to a folder on the computer. For example, copy the package to the C:\test\updates folder.

    3. Copy the Install.wim file from the Windows 7 installation media to the computer. For example, copy the Install.wim file to the C:\test\images folder.

  2. Add the hotfix to the Windows 7 installation image. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, and then click All Programs. Click Windows OPK, right-click Deployment Tools Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator.

    2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

      Dism /Get-WIMInfo /WimFile:C:\test\images\install.wim

This retrieves the name or the index number for the image that you want to change.

    3. Note the index number or the name of the Windows 7 installation image to which you will add the hotfix.

    4. Use a DISM command to mount the image by using the index number or the name that was noted in step 2c. For example, the index number of the image to which you will add the hotfix is 3. The following command mounts Index 3 to a folder that is named "offline" in the test directory.

      Dism /Mount-Wim /WimFile:C:\test\images\install.wim /Index:3 /MountDir:C:\test\offline

Note You must create the C:\test\offline folder before you mount the image.

    5. At the command prompt, type one of the following commands (as appropriate for your installation) to add the hotfix, and then press ENTER.

For x86-based versions of Windows 7:

      Dism /Image:C:\test\offline /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\test\updates\Windows6.1-KB2489036-x86.msu For x64-based versions of Windows 7:

      Dism /Image:C:\test\offline /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\test\updates\Windows6.1-KB2489036-x64.msu

    6. At the command prompt, type the following command to commit the changes and to unmount the image, and then, press ENTER:

      Dism /Unmount-WIM /MountDir:C:\test\offline /Commit

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.

File information

The English (United States) version of this hotfix installs files that have the attributes that are listed in the following tables. The dates and the times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The dates and the times for these files on your local computer are displayed in your local time together with your current daylight saving time (DST) bias. Additionally, the dates and the times may change when you perform certain operations on the files.

Windows 7 file information notes

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

  • The files that apply to a specific product, milestone (RTM, SPn), and service branch (LDR, GDR) can be identified by examining the file version numbers as shown in the following table:

    Version

    Product

    Milestone

    Service branch

    6.1.7600.20xxx

    Windows 7

    RTM

    LDR

    6.1.7601.21xxx

    Windows 7

    SP1

    LDR

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows 7" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.
