Symptoms

An application that is based on the Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 Shell (Isolated) crashes when you access the search feature in the Options dialog box on the Tools menu. Additionally, if a debugger is attached to the process, you may receive the following call stack information and exception:

System.InvalidCastException: Specified cast is not valid.

Cause

This problem occurs because the Visual Studio Shell (Isolated) cannot find a service that is typically shipped together with the full Visual Studio 2013 package.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must have an application that is based on the Visual Studio 2013 Isolated Shell installed.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you install the hotfix if the affected files are not being used at the time of installation. We recommend that you close all Visual Studio 2013-related components before you install the hotfix.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
