Get-Mailbox returns incorrect value for the UseDatabaseRetentionDefaults property in an Exchange Server environment

Symptoms

The mailbox database RetainDeletedItemsUntilBackup value shows as true after you run the following two commands in a Microsoft Exchange Server environment:

  • Set-MailboxDatabase -Identity MailboxDatabase -RetainDeletedItemsUntilBackup:$true

  • Set-Mailbox -Identity Mailbox -UseDatabaseRetentionDefaults:$true

However, when you run the Get-Mailbox cmdlet and view the UseDatabaseRetentionDefaults value, it shows that the value is false.

Cause

This issue occurs because the UseDatabaseRetentionDefaults property of a mailbox is displayed incorrectly as false when the administrator has set the RetainDeletedItemsUntilBackup property on the mailbox database to true.

Workaround

To verify that this value is set correctly, run the following command in Exchange Management Shell (EMS):

Import-Module ActiveDirectoryThen, run the following command in EMS, and check that the mDBUseDefaults value is true:

Get-ADUser Alias -Properties mDBUseDefaults

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
