You can record your screen easily and for free using the Clipchamp video editor.

To take a screen recording, go to the record & createtab on the left toolbar of the editor. Next, click on the screen option.

Audio will also be recorded through your computer's microphone, for example, if you want to talk while showing your screen (unless you turn the audio recording off).

Step 1. Click on the record and create tab

Click on the record and create tab on the toolbar, then click on the screen button.

A permission popup window will appear at the top of your screen. Allow Clipchamp access to use your microphone.

Another popup window will appear with screen recording options. Either record your entire screen, application window, or Chrome tab. We have selected to screen record a Chrome tab for this tutorial. Click on the tab of your choice, then click Share.

You will be brought to the Chrome tab you have selected to screen record. Your screen is now actively recording. Your audio will automatically start recording when you click Share. Your built-in microphone will pick up on your voice, computer or mouse clicking, and any noise around you. To stop recording your screen, click Stop sharing.

TIP: If you want to record for longer than the maximum time (shown to the right of the elapsed time), try taking several shorter recordings and combining them in the editor later.

Step 3. Save your screen recording

Once you have clicked stop sharing, you will be returned to the editor. You can now preview your screen recording with audio. If you’re unhappy with the screen-recorded video, click retake recording. If you want to use your video, click save and edit.

Your video will download automatically to your computer. Click on the your media tab to find your screen recording media. The audio will be attached to the media file. Your video will automatically be added to your timeline.

Step 4. Edit your screen recording audio

You can mute your screen recording audio by clicking on the microphone icon on the timeline.

In the editor, you can edit the video, e.g. trim unwanted parts off the start or end, split it to cut out unwanted parts in the middle, or even add music.

If the recording doesn't fit the dimensions of your project (e.g. you see black bars on either side of it) you can crop it to fit.

For more information on Clipchamp's editing tools, see how to edit a video article.

Step 5. Export your video

If you're finished editing and would like to save the screen recording in your timeline to your computer, click the export button in the top right. For more information, see: exporting your video.
