What is Instruction Generation?

Instructions generation drastically simplifies the Assignments creation process by allowing the teacher to create the outline of an Assignment Instructions and use generative AI to add and update to the Instructions tailored to their scenario.

The teacher will then be presented with the instructions generated for them to review and finetune by adjusting characteristics such as the target age range, and additional set prompts to adjust the text..  Once the teacher has approved and saved the Instructions, they can publish the Assignment to students.

What can Instructions generation do?

Instructions generation supports the following generative AI operations:

AI Operation

AI Action

Instructions are generated based on: Grade Level (set by the user), Class Name, Module Title and Description (if used in Teams), Assignment Title and Assignment Instructions Outline.

Instructions rewrite: AI Instructions are rewritten based off revised values for Grade Level (set by the user), Class Name, Module Title and Description (if used in Teams), Assignment Title and Assignment Instructions Outline.

What is Instructions generation's intended use(s)?

Instructions generation is intended for teacher in the loop where the feature is only available to educators/teachers, and the teacher must review/approve the generated content before the Instructions is shown to students.

What are the limitations of Instructions generation? How can users minimize the impact of Instructions generation's limitations when using the system?

Instructions generation is not grounded in factual knowledge, so generated content should not be assumed to be factually correct.  Teachers should validate any sort of generated, factual statement.

What operational factors and settings allow for effective and responsible use of Instructions generation?

Instruction generation automatically translates content into the user’s specified language within Teams using Azure Cognitive Services.  To check if Instructions generation supports a given language, consult the ACS Translator’s supported languages list: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/ai-services/translator/language-support
